Recently Saxon Steels have updated their website to the new responsive version of vCMS. But what's all the fuss about responsive, mobile friendly websites?
Well, in 2016 mobile web usage overtook desktop for the first time. More people now use their phone or tablet to browse the web than people using desktop or laptop computers. That's a significant milestone for the internet and for website owners, as Google is now prioritising mobile friendly websites over those that are not in it's internet search results.
But how do Google know ?
Once your website is live on the internet, Google will eventually find it, if you haven't already submitted it for indexing. Their search spiders crawl the internet 24 hours a day, and read through your site from file to file building up a record of what's in it, what it links to etc. Part of that process includes figuring out if your website would work well on a handheld device - that's not just 'fitting' to the screen, but other things like speed, the order in which the page and it's related files load and navigation areas for users to 'tap' .
They work all that out, and if your site is responsive, great. If not, they might not return your site for a relevant search by a user, in particular if another site has relevant data and is mobile friendly.
To find out if your site is responsive you can use Google's online tool - https://testmysite.thinkwithgoogle.com
Our vCMS content managed website application is fully responsive and optimised for search, so if you find your site doesn't meet mobile requirements, give us a call or pop in for a chat on bringing your website into the mobile world.
